Discover Your Target Audience

How to Discover Your Target Audience on Reddit

This guide will walk you through finding and organizing Reddit communities (subreddits) where your ideal customers are actively engaged. By creating a targeted Audience in GummySearch, you establish a foundation for all your customer research and marketing activities.

1. Create and Name Your Audience

First, navigate to the Audiences page and create a new one. When naming your Audience, think about the people you want to reach, not your product. For instance, if you're Canned Laughter, a startup that helps comedians generate content, you should name your audience "Comedians" not "Canned Laughter."

Focus on your audience's identity. There probably isn't a community dedicated to your product yet, but there are broader communities full of people who could be interested in it.

2. Refine with Keywords

GummySearch will suggest subreddits based on your Audience name. To get more precise results, add 2-4 keywords that your target audience might use. Start with broad terms and then add more specific ones.

For example, to find comedians, you could use keywords like 'stand-up', 'comedy writing', 'funny', and 'jokes'. Avoid overly specific phrases like 'comedians who need new material'.

3. Select Relevant Subreddits

Review the list of suggested subreddits and select the ones that are most relevant to your audience. If a community doesn’t seem like a good fit, you can remove it. Don’t worry about getting it perfect at this stage; you can always make changes later.

The 'New Audience' section is visible with a header and several components. At the top, under 'SEARCH KEYWORDS,' there are four active keywords: 'Programming' (associated with 2.3/min), 'Python' (associated with 1.9/min), 'Software Developers' (associated with 4.5/hr), and 'learn python' (associated with 2.0/hr). A '+ New Keyword' button is also present. Below the keywords, under 'SUBREDDIT RESULTS 38/39,' a grid of subreddit cards is displayed. Each card shows the subreddit name (e.g., r/learnpython, r/learnprogramming, r/cscareerquestions, r/programming, r/Python, r/datascience, r/pythontips, r/learnjavascript), the number of members, and a brief description. Some of these cards have icons next to the subreddit names. Notably, a pop-up menu is displayed over the 'r/datascience' card, offering options like 'Relevant Subreddit (Add to your audience),' 'Show More Details,' and 'Not Relevant.' At the bottom of the screen, a summary shows '7 Subreddits Selected' with a total of '8.4M Members,' and a prominent 'Create Audience' button. An 'X' icon in the top right corner suggests a way to close the 'New Audience' interface.

4. Create Your Audience

Once you’ve selected the subreddits you want to include, click “Create Audience.” This will save your list of communities, allowing you to easily track conversations, identify trends, and engage with your target audience. With your Audience created, you can now use keyword searches to find relevant discussions, set up keyword tracking, and analyze the conversations happening within your niche.

Your Audience is a powerful tool for customer research. Use it to find pain points, validate ideas, and connect with potential customers.
